The second day of the IURC LAC Regional Networking Event moved from roundtable discussions to the streets of Cali and Valle del Cauca. Participants took part in a series of technical visits across the city of Cali — for those in the Cities track — and Valle del Cauca — for those in the Regions track — exploring local initiatives and projects that showcase how sustainable and innovative solutions are being implemented on the ground.

Cities: urban transformation in action

Participants in the Cities track began the day with a visit to the Pance Biodiversity Park, a 920,000-square-metre natural area located in Cali, designed for social use, water protection and biodiversity conservation. The visit highlighted how nature-based solutions can contribute to urban resilience and environmental sustainability.

The programme continued at Cristo Rey Ecopark, an urban revitalisation project linked to public space transformation, nature conservation, tourism and the dynamisation of local economies. With viewpoints and biodiversity corridors that help preserve local wildlife, the site offers an inspiring perspective on the natural richness of Cali.

After a traditional lunch, the visit continued to the historic centre of Cali. Participants explored the surroundings of the Alcaldía de Cali, the Boulevard del Río and the neighbourhood of San Antonio. The guided tour focused on heritage conservation models, public space renewal and urban revitalisation strategies, offering insights into how cities can balance preservation with contemporary urban needs.

Regions: innovation, bioeconomy and circularity

Participants in the Regions track focused on territorial development and innovation ecosystems. The first stop was CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture) — a world-renowned centre that has, for decades, worked to make agriculture more competitive, profitable and resilient through sustainable natural resource management. Here, participants explored bioeconomy models, applied research, sustainable agriculture practices and climate resilience technologies relevant to regional development.

Following a networking lunch featuring traditional regional cuisine and a live music performance, the programme continued with a visit to Carvajal Empaques, where participants gained first-hand insight into how circular economy principles are integrated into industrial processes. The visit showcased approaches to redesign, reduction, reuse and recycling of materials, highlighting the role of the private sector in advancing sustainability.

Strengthening connections

The technical visits, together with the informal moments throughout the day, provided valuable opportunities for networking, peer learning and exchange among delegations, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the programme.
