Jeonju City has been awarded €10,000 under a European Union (EU) urban cooperation initiative.

According to the city government, its collaborative project on sustainable tourism, implemented in partnership with cities in Portugal and Italy, was selected as one of the top-performing proposals in an EU competitive funding call, receiving an initial grant of €10,000 (approximately KRW 17 million).

The International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) programme is a global platform that facilitates policy exchange and joint initiatives between European and non-European cities in key policy domains such as climate neutrality, digital transformation, tourism, and urban innovation.

The funding call was designed to provide implementation support for projects led by participating IURC cities, with submissions assessed based on criteria including long-term sustainability, policy effectiveness, and innovation.

Among 28 projects involving 97 cities worldwide, only two were selected, including the sustainable tourism initiative jointly advanced by Jeonju, Coimbra (Portugal), and Prato (Italy).

Vice Mayor Yoon Dong-wook commented, “This competitive funding award is a significant achievement that reflects the EU’s recognition of Jeonju’s policy capacity and international cooperation framework in urban collaboration. Moving forward, we will continue to enhance Jeonju’s global competitiveness through sustained policy exchange with leading international cities and stronger global networks.”
