Researchers, regional governments, and innovation agencies from Europe, Asia, and Australasia convened an online joint research workshop  on 7 July 2026 under the IURC Community of Practice (CoP) 3 – Hydrogen Market & Industry.

The workshop welcomed participants from Catalonia (Spain), Île-de-France (France), Christchurch and Taranaki (New Zealand), Chungcheongnam-do and Jeju-do (Republic of Korea), and Osaka Prefecture (Japan).

Researchers from leading universities and research institutes—including Université Paris Cité, Université Paris-Saclay, and CNRS (Île-de-France); ICIQ, ICFO, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Catalonia); the University of Canterbury (Christchurch); Jeju National University (Jeju-do); and Dankook University and KITECH (Chungcheongnam-do)—introduced their latest research and explored opportunities for future collaboration.

Throughout the workshop, researchers showcased innovations spanning the entire hydrogen value chain, including hydrogen production, storage, electrolysis, electrocatalysis, advanced materials, fuel cells, AI applications, and hydrogen infrastructure. Regional representatives also shared their hydrogen strategies and highlighted the importance of connecting research with industry and public policy to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen economy.

“Together, all the regions have complementary capabilities. They cover almost the entire hydrogen value chain —
from advanced materials and hydrogen production to storage, transport, digital technologies and end-use applications.”

Aida Diaz Saez (Catalonia)

Beyond showcasing ongoing research, the workshop focused on identifying opportunities for future collaboration through joint research, researcher exchange, collaborative publications, and international funding calls. Participants also discussed next steps for building research consortia and expanding cooperation under future European programmes.

The session reaffirmed the value of international knowledge exchange in advancing hydrogen innovation and marked another step toward establishing a long-term global research network to support sustainable hydrogen development across participating regions.
