Artificial intelligence, digital twins and data spaces are becoming essential tools for managing increasingly complex urban mobility systems. During an IURC Community of Practice 2 session, experts from Turin and Rotterdam shared how their cities are using digital technologies to improve traffic management, support sustainable mobility and make better-informed planning decisions.
Turin presented its integrated approach to AI-powered mobility management, combining real-time traffic analysis, autonomous vehicle testing and a city-wide Mobility Control Centre. The city has also established an ethical AI committee to ensure that innovation is deployed responsibly, balancing technological advancement with privacy, transparency and public trust. By integrating multiple data sources into a mobility digital twin, Turin can test scenarios before implementing them on the streets.
Rotterdam showcased how digital twins and predictive modelling are helping the city manage the impact of multiple simultaneous construction projects. By combining traffic data, logistics plans and infrastructure information, the city can anticipate congestion, identify bottlenecks and coordinate mitigation measures with contractors and neighbouring authorities before problems arise.
The session highlighted the importance of combining advanced digital technologies with strong governance frameworks. Participants concluded that ethical oversight, secure data sharing and collaboration between public and private stakeholders are key to unlocking the full potential of AI and digital twins in creating smarter, more resilient urban mobility systems.
