Milan and Zhengzhou held their first online meeting on 9 January 2026 to explore collaboration opportunities under the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), marking the start of a structured dialogue between the two cities focused on policy learning, sustainable urban food systems, and international cooperation.
During the session, the Milan team introduced the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, outlining its six action areas and the support provided by the Pact Secretariat to member cities worldwide. Milan representatives also shared their experience in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting cooperation with cities such as Bangkok, Singapore, and Shanghai on initiatives including food waste reduction, urban agriculture, circular food systems, and school meal programs.

The discussion focused on the process of joining the Pact, including eligibility and procedural requirements. Milan clarified that membership becomes effective upon submission of a formal letter of commitment signed by the highest political authority. Zhengzhou expressed strong interest in joining the Pact, potentially as a pilot city, and sought further information on priority-setting and participation in thematic Communities of Practice (CoP).
Zhengzhou representatives presented an overview of the city?s development profile and shared their vision for building a sustainable urban food system. Key priorities include supporting local and organic food production, strengthening community-based food supply networks, and positioning Zhengzhou as an international case city within the framework of the Milan Pact.

The meeting concluded with agreement on next steps, including the exchange of presentations and policy documents, coordination related to an upcoming food policy event in Zhengzhou, and continued discussions on future collaboration. Both sides also explored the possibility of Zhengzhou hosting a Milan Pact regional forum for the Asia-Pacific region in the coming years, reflecting a strong mutual interest in deepening cooperation.
