IURC Asia & Australasia Partner Country: Vietnam
With a population of 95 million people, living in 64 provinces and 5 cities with a total area of 329,314 km2, Vietnam is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. During recent decades, cities in Vietnam became the engines of economic development, and rapid urbanisation has been the consequence. Vietnam has developed two independent and dominant core-periphery urban systems: Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Vietnam’s rapid economic growth is driven by these two urban systems with high growth and industrial concentration within these cities and their surrounding areas.
Previous EU-Vietnam City Cooperation
Vietnam, specifically Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, participated in the World Cities programme 2017-2020, resulting in the identification of pilot projects in the areas of smart city development and mobility. Along with the cities of Kosice and Milan, three meetings took place:
- Kick-off event in Hanoi and visit to HCMC (June 2017)
- Follow-up visits of Vietnamese cities to the EU (November 2017)
- Closing session in Hanoi (February 2018)
As a result of these encounters, pilot projects were identified in the areas of smart city development and mobility.
Also, the IUC programme supported local climate action implemented in three Vietnamese cities during 2020, namely:
- Can Tho: https://www.asian-mayors.eu/?s=%22can+tho%22
- Da Nang: https://www.asian-mayors.eu/?s=%22da+nang%22
- Tam Ky: https://www.asian-mayors.eu/?s=%22tam+ky%22
All these three cities produced climate action plans focusing on mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change.
