IURC Malaysia and Singapore Officials Engage ASEAN Forums 2025: ASUF, AGMF, MGMAC in Kuala Lumpur

The EU-funded International Urban and Regional Cooperation for Asia–Australasia extends its sincere thanks to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s Centre of Excellence – Urbanice Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (an IURC non-pilot city), and UCLG-ASPAC for establishing strategic engagement platforms for our IURC cities during the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanization Forum (ASUF), held alongside the ASEAN Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) and the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC).

Mr. Timo Goosman, Minister Counsellor (Political, Press and Information Section) and Deputy Head of Mission, Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, accepted the invitation to support Yang Berhormat Dato’ Haji Mohd. Noorazam bin Dato’ Haji Osman, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA and IURC pilot city), in partnership with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), in maximising the platform opportunity to share knowledge and build partnerships that drive green transformation across industries.

The multi-stakeholder dialogue—bringing together representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, and research institutions—was titled “Unlocking Green Opportunities: An Investment Framework for Sustainable Industry Growth” and took place on 13 August 2025 at Lounge 4, Hall 4. IRDA, a newcomer city selected by the IURC programme as a pilot city, is focusing on the Just and Clean thematic networks and working across seven strategic economic sectors between the EU, Johor, and Singapore.

From Singapore, Ms. Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State (Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth), Chairperson of the Mayors’ Committee and Mayor of the South West District, was accompanied by Mr. Baey Yam Keng, Minister of State (Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth) and Mayor of the North East District, along with their delegation members. They engaged in a fruitful dialogue with YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr. (Dr.) Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and Special Envoy of ASEAN Cities and Local Government, and her team. During the Opening Ceremony, they also had the opportunity to meet and greet Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Access the video [here] and another video [here].

More than 300 cities, represented by their Mayors, Vice Mayors and delegation members, participated in various dialogue sessions during the Meeting of ASEAN Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) 2025 on the theme “ASEAN Future Cities and Regions: Inclusivity and Sustainability.YBhg. H.E. Minister Nga Kor Ming, Ministry of Housing and Local Government delivered special remarks at the Opening Session. YBhg. Hj Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, Mayor of Seberang Perai (IURC pilot city), was also present with his delegation and actively participated in the half-day series of back-to-back dialogue sessions.
