IURC Hybrid Seminar to Spotlight Global Urban and Regional Cooperation at the Expo 2025 Osaka

Organised as part of the international dimension of EU regional policy, this special session at the Expo 2025 Osaka will highlight how European cities and regions are working globally to advance sustainable urban development and regional innovation. Hosted under the EU-funded International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) programme, the event will showcase successful cooperation models between cities and regions in Europe and their counterparts in Asia and Australasia. It will spotlight leading practices in smart city, climate resilience and regional innovation, along with cutting-edge regional innovation initiatives in biotech, digital transformation, start-up ecosystems, and the circular economy.
The event, which marks the official launch of the IURC Asia initiative, will be opened by Mr. Thomas Gnocchi, Deputy Head, European Union Delegation to Japan and by Mr. Nobuhiko Yamaguchi, Vice Governor of Osaka Prefecture. It will include remarks by Mr. Jaume Duch Guillot, Regional Minister for the European Union and External Action, Government of Catalonia. At the webinar, the IURC programme will be introduced by Ms. Themis Christophidou, Director-General, European Commission, DG REGIO, via video message.
In a moderated panel discussion, representatives from Catalonia, Milan, Christchurch, Osaka and Aichi Prefectures will share their experiences in the IURC programme, showcasing concrete results of the cooperation.
