See how two regions are making bicycles an integral part of public transit.

Since 2022, the region of Stuttgart (VRS) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) have collaborated under the IURC North America Programme to improve multimodal travel, leisure access, and transport equity.

The region of Stuttgart shared its Fahrrad2Go programme, which equips buses with bike racks and trailers, enabling up to 15 bicycles per vehicle. Combined with a unified fare system and the Deutschlandticket, these innovations make bike-and-ride travel convenient, inclusive, and sustainable.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is adapting these solutions for its Unlocking the Blue Hills pilot, connecting underserved neighborhoods to the Blue Hills Reservation. Inspired by Stuttgart, MassDOT is testing rear-mounted racks and towable trailers to expand active mobility without complex interior modifications.

Through study visits, technical calls, and joint discussions, both regions shared technical expertise, governance strategies, and community engagement lessons.
