Discover how two cities are transforming urban data into smart, open solutions.
The city of Hamburg (Germany) and the city of Toronto (Canada) joined forces under the IURC North America Programme to share strategies for automating and standardizing urban data.
The city of Hamburg introduced its Urban Data Platform (UDP_HH), integrating datasets across agencies while transitioning to open-source solutions. Toronto shared its use of Apache Airflow to automate data pipelines, enabling faster, scalable, and transparent workflows.
Through the exchange, the city of Hamburg explored open-source automation to reduce reliance on commercial tools, while the city of Toronto strengthened central data governance, open standards, and API use. Both cities applied lessons in modularity, interoperability, and public accessibility, making data more useful for officials, researchers, and residents.
Practical outcomes include Toronto’s Open Data Portal with 450+ datasets, 50% automated publication, and apps like RocketMan and Waste Wizard, while Hamburg initiated a Data Automation Project benefiting neighboring municipalities.
