Discover how two cities are turning green spaces into engines for community wellbeing.
The city of Nanaimo (Canada) and the municipality of Pavlos Melas (Greece) joined forces under the IURC North America Programme to explore innovative park management. Over months of study visits and exchanges, the cities examined how parks can support healthier, more connected communities and foster shared responsibility.
The city of Nanaimo shared its structured, transparent approach to park governance, using leases, licenses, and co-management agreements within a clear policy and fee framework. This allows nonprofits, cultural groups, and private partners to co-steward public land, ensuring access, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
The municipality of Pavlos Melas showcased its Metropolitan Park project, transforming a former military camp into a vibrant public space. Its inclusive planning process demonstrated how engagement with diverse community groups can balance interests and build trust.
Walking together through parks in both cities, teams explored adaptive reuse, long-term planning, and collaboration in action. The partnership strengthened Nanaimoβs models and gave Pavlos Melas concrete frameworks to activate its new park.
