Thematic Webinar Series – Closing Modules

The IURC Asia and Australasia team will be running a series of thematic webinars dealing with:

  • EU Funding: Opportunities for possible pilot / follow-up actions
  • Tactical Urbanism – Deep Dive and Pilot Actions
  • Smart City and Digital Twins – Introduction and Built Environments
  • Energy Transition & Smart Urban Districts
  • Urban Infrastructures and Adaptation to Climate Change

Each module will consist of a thematic introductory session (1), followed by a practical, interactive session (mostly in the next day). Each session will last 60-90 min and will start at 08:00am Brussels time (CET). Please note that we expect participants from several parts of the world (especially from Europe, Asia and Australasia) to join the coaching series. The modules will be imparted by senior practitioners from city governments, academia, businesses and civil society. The goal is to strengthen the thematic, cross-country cooperation among city experts and to showcase some pilot actions under implementation.

Session 1 will provide an overview of Horizon Europe and guide through the identification of relevant calls and partners. Brief overview of the Life program.

Tuesday 12.12.2023 08h00 – 09h00 AM CET Smart City & Digital Twins 1 – Introduction Dr Flavio Rosa, Professor at CITERA, Faculty of Architecture, Sapienza University of Rome The digitalisation of the built environment is one of the great challenges for creating Smart Cities. The Digital Twin represents one of the most innovative strategic tools in involving administrations, academia and businesses. This module will introduce the digital twins, focusing on the EU’s “smart cities and communities” approach. Case studies from Rome will be presented.

Wednesday 13.12.2023 08h00 – 09h00 AM CET Smart City & Digital Twins 2 – Interactive Workshop Dr Flavio Rosa, Professor at CITERA, Faculty of Architecture, Sapienza University of Rome Practical exercise session. Discussions will be facilitated by using interactive polls (Slido/Mentimeter) to address concrete questions like: “Which benefits do you envisage for you city? Which barriers or difficulty can be met in your city developing the presented solutions?”

Dr Ryan Reynolds, Director, The Gap Filler, New Zealand Pedestrian plazas, pop-up bike lanes, pop-up parks and innovative playgrounds are examples developed by city authorities and civil society to improve the liveability of their cities. This fresh-up and interactive module builds on the two webinar sessions ran in February and May 2023 respectively.

Dr. Gianluca Fabbri, Director, EU Fund Management Master Course, Link Campus University

This module will provide case studies from Milan and Hamburg. The coaches will also explore with participants their interest to cooperate on concrete upcoming calls in either Horizon Europe or LIFE programmes. Dr Fabbri will coach participants on how to draft proposals for both programmes, as well as on key criteria for evaluation.

Friday 22.12.2023 08h00 – 09h30 AM CET Urban Adaptation / Green Infrastructure Dr. Haris Piplas, Leading Consultant for Integrated Urban Solutions, Drees & Sommer Climate change poses enormous challenges to cities around the world, including flooding, extreme temperatures (heat island), water scarcity and wildfires. This webinar will look into practical solutions for cities to adapt their infrastructure through nature-based solutions (NBS) as part of green-infrastructure approach. It will close the thematic webinar series started in 2021 with the “Addressing Climate Change Effects in Cities” session.
